Uyanga Erdenebold You Don't Need Sight to Have Great Vision
If you are seeking inspiration, look no further. This interview features Uyanga Erdenebold, a Mongolian woman who was born with sight...and due to a degenerative genetic condition, was blind by the time she was 20. Despite her declining vision, Uyanga pursued every educational opportunity available. Given the economic state of affairs in Mongolia at the time, such resources were extremely limited. There was only one school for the blind...which was located hundreds of kilometers from her family home. All graduates of that school were expected to work in a factory, carrying out mundane, sedentary tactile tasks. Uyanga refused to accept this as her fate.
This interview details her incredible journey to become the first blind Mongolian to be awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to study at a university in the U.S....and, upon her return from the States, her experiences as the owner of the first guide dog in Mongolia. A few short years later, she facilitated the effort to introduce (and ultimately pass) the first rights-based legislation for disabled people in Mongolia. Her guide dog, Gladys, was the first dog welcomed into a Mongolian government building.
Uyanga proves without a doubt that you do not need sight to have great vision.
